The Czech composer and accordionist Jiri Lukes studied composition (under Eduard Dousa) and accordion (under Ladislav Horak) at Prague Conservatory. During his studies he received numerous awards in accordion competitions in the Czech Republic, Slovakia or Croatia. He completed master degree at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague under Ivana Loudova. Over the past few years Jiri has been cooperating with other composers. In his work, main focus is placed on the interpretation of contemporary music and the exploration of new possibilities of musical expression. These two areas were also the pillars for Lukes’s book New timbral possibilities of accordion in the context of contemporary instrumentation. Some of Lukes’s pieces were performed in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, China, Serbia and Ukraine. In 2014, a broadcast about his work was on Radio Beograd. Lately, as a co-founder of the art group O.E.M Arts, he has been involved in several multimedia projects, including audiovisual art, performance etc. Besides his creative work, he has been teaching at Prague Conservatory and Štefánikova and Taussigova music schools. Since 2015 he represents the Czech Republic in the Confédération Internationale des Accordéonistes under UNESCO.
